The key is that the "shutter" must be open during the time the flash
is actually firing. What is happening here, is that the A1 is quicker
than the flash.  As you get higher and higher speeds, you are just
getting the leading edge of the flash burst and eventually you miss
the flash burst altogether.

I have found that anything faster than 1/500 is usually not a good
idea because the color of the flash tends to change throughout the
burst and that you start to trim off the trailing edge of the burst
which affects your exposure.
