How much of this "nightmare" is a result of your friends' actions?  Did 
they get references before they agreed to enter into a contract with the 
gallery owner?  Did both parties agree to end the contract or did your 
friends just decide to "stop in and grab their photos"?  If the latter, 
your friends reneged on their part of the agreement and it was a bad 
idea to do do with someone who is drunk and possibly irrational most of 
the time.  Rational people need to behave in rational ways when 
confronted with irrationality.
