Not exactly, AIS was introduced around the time of the FA and provided a
linear aperture stop down action to work correctly with shutter priority and
program mode bodies.  Early AIS lenses had no IC or electrical connections.
Later "chipped" lenses maintained the AIS compatibility (at least for a
while).
