Oh, man, I know I'm going to regret posting this, so maybe I won't,
but a year ago I decided to take the plunge and bought a Mac Pro and
an Apple Cinema display and I swear with God as my witness I have
_never_ looked back. OS Tiger took a little getting used to, but the
vast majority of my problems switching over were because I tried to
make things more difficult than they were. And because Adobe gave me
Photoshop for Mac to replace my Photoshop for Windows, the hideously
high cost of software conversion was not so hideously high. Genuine
Fractals and Neat Image both allowed me to port their products over
to the Intel Mac at no cost. The only thing I shelled out for was MS
Office.
That said, there are a few things I miss, but not enough to send me
back. One of them is MS Publisher. Another is Qimage. Qimage actually
has caused me to keep my Windows machine running next to my Mac,
because Qimage allows me to quickly and efficiently generate
wheelbarrows full of 3.2x5.2 images to put in 5x7 mats and sell at
various outlets. So far I haven't found any photoshop workaround that
lets me do it as quickly and easily as Qimage.
Which means eventually I'll wind up with Parallels on my Mac, and
Windows, and Qimage. Or someone will plug the gap and write a Qimage-
like program for Mac. I already talked to the guy who does Qimage and
he says he's done surveys and doesn't think the Mac market is there
to make the effort worthwhile. I think he's wrong, but it's a PC guy
so he doesn't speak Mac and that might get in the way anyway. It
requires a bit of different thinking when working on a Mac. Kinda
like riding a Harley vs. riding a BMW. Both bikes will get you where
you're going, but the ride is different, and a matter of preference.
But the headaches are gone. The late night cursing at the
capriciousness of the gods is gone. I sit down at the computer, get
my work done, and get up again. I'm not under the hood, either
physically or virtually. Ever. The problems I have are all a direct
result of the work I'm trying to do and the ignorance I bring to the
project, not my computer throwing roadblocks up in front of me just
to watch me squirm.
Still, everyone's mileage varies, and I really don't want to get a
Mac/PC war going here. Just a touch of my own personal experience to
put into the pipe and smoke while making decisions.
