Marketing genius and Nikon are seldom mentioned in the same paragraph,
at least without the included negative such "lack of marketing
genius", "no marketing genius", or the sarcastic "real marketing
genius." They denied interest in a full frame camera until they
announced one. They did no build up or nourishment at all. They issued
no Canon style white papers or Olympus style hyperbole in public
announcements that would make you think the latecomer to the party
invented the technology.

The lag between the D3 which is obviously a sports/journalism
camera( 11 frames/second?) is easily explained by the development
needed and the traditional order. The D2H preceded the D2X by 6
months. Even then people with more money than sense bought D2H cameras
as a general use camera and many continue to claim image quality of
their 4MP superior to the D2X. Frenzy does not require marketing
genius to occur.

If there is a D4 or D3X, as I think there will be, it is probably a
year away because the Nikon development team is small. More new FF
lenses need to be developed in the same time period. If the sensor is
also from a Sony-Nikon collaboration, it will be Sony's first FF
effort as well and a lot of coordination will be needed. The
difficulties in getting acceptable high ISO performance from a 22 or
24 MP sensor is not only more difficult than with 12 MP, but the
expectations will be higher in a competitor to an $8000 camera. Of
course that price makes the argument that people are not in a frenzy
to buy a the D3. Few of them are willing to pop for an $8000 camera,
just as few Canon owners pop for a 1Ds. Nikon does understand that
and they probably are not is a great hurry since the sales figures
will probably not be affected much either way.
