I sometimes wonder with all this just how much our ideas are
conditioned by watching TV - NTSC seems harsher than PAL for instance
and does that alter the perception of 'appropriate colour' between
Europeans and Americans. Certainly, a lot of the US photography I see
is too garish for my taste.
Given that, I like to knock down highlights on noses, cheeks, teeth,
etc - I like to use the clone tool set to 50% or less with maximum
soft edge (feather) to fill them lightly. That preserves the
highlight but softens it.
Just ordered a book off Amazon - 'Skin' - can't remember the author
but it purports to discuss all the possible techniques for dealing
with, well, skin.
