I did a rough calculation on an account of the high protein meals in  
early Jamestown and found a similar calorie consumption. It made no  
sense to me until the recent Atkins diet fad. I think what they lacked  
were carbohydrates. They must have all been in permanent ketoacidosis  
with acne and fetid halitosis.
