Nissans and Cherokees... are not what I would call a french designed car...

Hmm. You don't appreciate a 6000 pound truck with a Cadillac or  
Lincoln badge on it?  What is wrong with you? :-)

Bad as it is, we frequently get special "American versions of imported  
models for our market. Impossible to get a stylish hatchback here,  
well except for the Mini and VW GTI. Clean diesels are always a year  
away. Engines have to be designed around poor gasoline. The only  
French cars here are the Nissans and a few old Jeep Cherokees.  No  
Italian cars. A limited range of VWs and Audis. Surprisingly I am  
seeing cabs in Long Beach exactly like the ones I rode in in London.  
Not sure how they get those in.
