Well, if you have a Macintosh, FireWire is a given if the computer 
was manufactured any time in the last ten years.

On Wintels, probably the surest way is to check Device Manager to 
see if there is an IEEE 1394 connection on board. The site

has a picture of what Device Manager should look like.

You also can look at the connections on your computer to see if you 
have any FireWire ports; they look much like USB slots, except one 
end is rounded instead of square.

Then the next question is whether the port is FireWire 400 or 800, 
but that may not even matter; they're backward compatible and they 
differ only in transfer speed.
