**SIGH**

Well, I've just blown most of Saturday trying to re-acquire connectivity
amongst the various elements of my LAN. The problem, as I eventually
discovered, is that I installed the newest version of McAfee's virus
scanning/security product called "McAfee Security Center" (because their
simpler product, Viruscan, is no longer available), which promptly
lobotomized my LAN in the name of Internet security.

Here's the e-mail I sent to their Customer Service division:

"I am now in the process of de-installing your product from the two home
office computers I purchased it for approx. two weeks ago. While the
virus protection is good, your networking protection appears to have
turned my entire home LAN into a slavering idiot, none of the parts of
which can see each other. Attempting to run your Network Discovery
service seems to produce lovely network maps (which tells me that McAfee
actually sees the entire network), but is unable to allow me to
re-connect to any computer from any other computer. This may be the
ultimate in security, but it renders my LAN useless.

Please refund my money. In the future, if you wish to re-acquire my
business, make the network protection features optional, have a clear
and easy way to turn them off *completely*, and make sure the silly
thing actually works as advertised when it's on and supposedly allowing
PCs on a previously trusted LAN to see one another."

Just thought someone here might benefit from my unfortunate experience.

Garth
