For years, I've used something I haven't seen others do. (Perhaps it's
not such a good idea! :-)

I have short loops of thick nylon cord attached to the strap holes.
These loops are just big enough to get by first and second fingers
through, and tight enough that I can completely let go of the camera,
and it hangs from my hand. The first finger easily accesses the
shutter button.

On the E-20, E-300, and E-3, I use 1cm nylon webbing instead of cord,
to fit through the rectangular strap eyes.

On those rare occasions when I feel the need for a neck strap, one
easily clips to the loops, far enough from the camera to keep from
scratching it.

For even rarer occasions when I needed to bounce around while using a
neck strap (skiing), I used an adjustable bungie cord, clipped into
the same cord loops.

I've seen TWO cameras "bite it" when their owner set them on a table
or desk, but left the cord hanging over the edge, which then got
entangled with something or someone, and dragged the camera to the
floor.

But most of all, I find I'm most comfortable with the camera in my
hand rather than around my neck.
