I think you've answered your own question.  TTL exposure control, 
whether flash or non-flash only works in automatic mode on the camera... 
not to be confused, of course, with the automatic mode of the flash 
which requires manual mode on the camera.  In a nutshell, only one 
exposure boss is allowed at a time.
