There were several 'sides' in a way. He would have been fighting for  
a unit which had an identifiable ideology.

Many if not all of those who went to the International Brigades and  
similar units from the north of England were working class men who  
had been marginalised and politicised by the Depression (Jarrow  
marchers, etc.) and from other parts, middle and upper class  
intellectuals. Those were not people likely to volunteer for a right- 
wing cause. I'd be surprised if there were any but a few odd  
individuals on the other side.
