It makes you wonder why they continue to do this. Nikon used to use
the camera control software included with Nikon Capture to update
firmware, but since they separated that function from Capture NX it is
all done without any special software. Just connect your camera
formatted CF card to your computer by connecting your camera or your
card reader to your computer and dragging the downloaded update to it.
Disconnect from the computer and do the install from the camera menu.
Simple.
