Hello Dave,

Glad to see others as well are still shooting film.

There should be just one thread near the mount of an OM-1, and that is
used to actuate the light meter. The end of the thread is fixed to the
aperture transfer ring. There is a contrapment working on it as well,
driven by the shutter speed ring.

Normally all of the thread is above the mount. When it is dangling at
the bottom side of the mount, to me that is an indication that
something really broke, and it hasn't just run off a pulley.

A service manual can be found at http://olympus.dementia.org/Hardware/
, the exploded view is in the first download of the OM-1 Service
Manual. Unfortunately the exploded view doesn't show the thread when
in place. A correct mounting procedure is likely described in another
place of the manual.
The thread is part CA8946. It is on page 9 (fig 5/6), and is shown
twice: once the thread itself and once as a part connected to ring
CA8880.

It is a fairly simple procedure to remove the lens mount and take a
little peek. It can give an idea how difficult the repair is.

Or just send it to John. As I can see from the image it is quite an
oldie, and in good shape. Having it overhauled might be really worth
it.

Good luck and enjoy those film cameras.

Bart
