I agree with what Nathan has said about Lightroom, but especially "settle on
one ... and concentrate on learning it well". In my experience Lightroom is
a bit different from others, but repays the attention you give it.

Specifically, to address your last point:
"Do I gain anything using lightroom to organize photos that I do not get via
a solid directory structures:
photos -> may2008neverland -> web
       -> june2009otherland -> web
       -> ..."

Emphatically yes, as Lightroom allows you (amongst other categorisation
methods) to apply multiple keywords to a single image, and search on any one
or combination of keywords. It's an image database with multiple indices
(as many as you choose) whereas the solid directory structure is simply a
pre-defind contents list. In this respect, I think Lightroom earns its keep
in comparison to, say, Picasa, which can do plenty for the price ($0),
including RAW support, but does not attempt the database-like side of
things.

Lightroom will do everything you list, and more, quickly and efficiently. It
is the only software I use these days, from the initial RAW conversion to
final output (web or print). Don't waste your time testing a bunch of
packages. They can all do those things, but settle on one (I recommend
Lightroom) and concentrate on learning it well. And spend time shooting :-)

The software included with every digital camera I have ever owned has
sucked, and Olympus Master is no exception. The only reason I even installed
it is because it is needed to update the firmware on the cameras and lenses.
