To the best of my knowledge Moose is correct.  I am not aware of any 
digital camera that implements TTL-OTS (let's call it "off the sensor" 
since there's no film)  They all work by pre-flash measurement or a 
combination of pre-flash measurement along with feedback from the lens 
on the focusing distance to the subject if the lens is capable of that. 
  Canon has struggled for years to try to get this right but haven't 
been 100% successful.  I'm not aware of how the other brands are doing 
except that I think they may be doing better but not perfect.  The OM 
TTL-OTF for flash probably worked as well or better than anything else 
available today.
