I recently bought a Bogen 3021 BPRO also and agree with you on the center
column threads. Still a very nice tripod, especially for the price. I picked
mine up very lightly used for $100 and would do it again in a heartbeat.
Although, after lugging it along on a hike last weekend, I find myself
wishing for the carbon fiber version as well.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but why do you need a short column for
going to ground level with this tripod? What's wrong with just unscrewing
the normal center column and only using the top portion that the head
attaches to?
