If you're worried about it being stolen along the way then the chances  
are that everyone that comes into contact with 'your precious' will be  
an average person/worker who couldn't have any less interest in  
lenses. So it will be worthless to them. It does, of course, still  
have value to collectors, and for that reason I'd say get any repair  
done by an expert.
