Wasn't selenium seen as being convenient but not reliable with age?  
(the kind of timescale we'd now in amazing). I suspect that the issue  
became moot when cameras started to 'need' power for all sorts of  
other functions but the Cadmium cells were seen as a big step forward  
at the time.
