We, as a society, really have problems with sex. Traditional societies
married off, and still marry off, their children dipping even into
the preteen ages, leaving it to the husband to decide when he will
take her to bed. We are appalled by that and maintain the fiction that
young adults are children because it takes a lot of training and
passing a lot of hurdles in our society to be able go out and start a
new family. There is no reason that children or teens cannot be the
subject of photographic art except for the people that are unable to
tell the difference between art and pornography and who conflate a
picture of a child in a book of photography, or a family picture in
the nude(remember those?) into an evil that requires picketing of
mainstream bookstores or the reporting by processors of family
pictures to the police. I think that the use of children sexually or
as pornography is an obscenity, but people have been arrested for
using a camera in a park where fully clothed children are present.
That is an obscenity too, not much different than the Salem witch
trials.
