A 4/3 sensor is 17.3x13mm and when cropped to A4 (sq. root of 2) ratio
gives 17.3x12.2mm for a total area of 211.06 square mm. A Canon 1.6X
crop sensor is 22.2x14.8mm and when cropped A4 is 20.9x14.8mm for a
total area of 309.32 square mm or 46.6% larger. A Nikon 1.5X crop
sensor is 23.6x15.8mm and when cropped A4 is 22.3x15.8 for a total area
of 352.34 square mm or 47.7% larger. A Canon 5D sensor is 35.8x23.9mm
and cropped A4 is 33.8x23.9mm for a total area of 807.82 square mm or
383% larger.

Cropping A4 is not favorable to 4/3 format.
