There was some noise a while ago about two layer CMOS chips that would 
increase the light captured by moving the support and wiring off the 
surface. Perhaps this is what was meant and Sony has finally made it work.

Sounds useful, in any case, if it lowers noise on still cameras too. At 
the moment, all the high density compacts use CCDs, so it's not back-lit 
vs. front lit CMOS for small cameras, but back-lit CMOS vs. CCD.

Michael Reichmann is currently in love with a Sony W300 compact with 
13.6mp on a 1/1.7" sensor and Mike Johnston put a Canon SD870 on his 
recommended camera list, 8mp on 1/2.5". Both are over 300p/sqmm
