Crockett would accept the 40D as a TTL flash machine but I doubt he's 
ever even tested the 430EX on any body.  He rejects the 580EX but has 
accepted the 580EX II since it adds the previously missing auto mode. 
That said, he makes fun of the complicated menu system and the silly 
gyrations necessary to switch from TTL to auto.  The Nikon SB800 has it 
over the Canon here based on ruggedness and ergonomics.  But his real 
favorites are the Metz 58AF1 and (if you've got 3X the money) the 
Quantum Q Flash.  He has a summary here.

Unforutnately, I'm not aware of any flash tests for bodies other than 
Nikon or Canon.
