For me, the E3 is my primary system. I got the 50-200mm because I had  
an opportunity to buy one second-hand in like-new condition for an  
extremely attractive price. I considered the 70-300mm as well, but  
became concerned with softness noted in some reviews, and also I like  
the high maximum aperture of the 50-200mm. But yes, there is a price  
to pay in terms of weight, although on the E3 it does not feel too  
unbalanced. I have not tried it on my E420 yet ;-)
