It will take a whole lotta pixels to equal a piece of 4x5 or 8x10 film. 
  At some point the pixel density will have reached some practical 
maximum based on sensitivity and lens resolution (if it hasn't already) 
and the only other solution will be increasing the area of the capture 
surface.  But that's pretty much a cost dead-end without some dramatic 
change in chip fabrication technology.  Unless you have a NASA budget 
don't expect to buy a 4x5 digital camera.

But, using current technologies, I can foresee a large, high resolution 
camera built using an array of small sensors with processing software 
stitching the bits together.  It might even require a beam splitter to 
cover two separate arrays to seamlessly cover the gaps between chips but 
I think it could be done... with enough money.  Maybe it has already 
been done for a specialized application.
