I did much the same thing. In my case, the posts on the back of the 
badge were pushed through a single piece of  plastic long enough to have 
two holes in the right places. They were then simply bent, with heat, I 
assume, across the cack of the piece of plastic. That backing piece is 
still in there

I was going to go in with a single slit from the inside to remove 
whatever was holding it on, leaving just the two small holes in the outside.
