At least what we agree on isn't photography related, so it's OK. :-)

We watch everything time shifted. So the true, instant 30 second skip
and 10 second skip back buttons mean even less time spent skipping
commercials than before. From my research, none of the DirectTV or cable
DVRs do that, although I think you can hack TIVO. Apparently they've
been cowed into making skipping commercials hard by the TV/AD industry.

We watch a fair amount of TV, but are quite selective (by our
standards). So often there's nothing on to record, and sometimes there's
lots on at the same time. Also, for whatever reason, Dish doesn't have
the local PBS stations in HD. So the OTA tuner in the DVR, in addition
to the two satellite tuners, means we have PBS in HD and can record
three things at once, as long as one is OTA. Fortunately, there is a
large selection of OTA stations available here. When I saw that, I
decided to get coupon for an HD=>SD converter as a back-up and
possibly to give local stations on a small, old SD set in the guest room.

If we should ever need to record four things at once, the non-DVR
receiver on the bedroom TV has a feature I wasn't aware existed. It
blasts an IR signal powerful enough to bounce around the room and
operate the VCR stacked below it. I can set it to record a timed event
on the VCR. It turns itself on and onto the selected program, turns the
VCR Record on, then off. Just need to remember to leave the VCR on with
a tape in.
