First of all, a celebratory "Hooray" for a Moose post. :-)))

Second, this T-flash thing on the 3T vs 4T and how the F280 does its
thing or how to modulate the fill has bothered me for many moons.

My take on it from a few threads both old and new are as follows:
The 3T with a T flash in TTL mode is the only body that can drag the
shutter (in this mode) or easily change the ambient/flash ratio by
using the exp compensation dial. My read of the esif is that moving the
exp comp to + will increase the ambient and the Flash will complete the
exposure
OTF until satisfied. So, how to adjust overall exp for a non medium
toned subject? Probably lie to the camera with the ASA setting.
It never actually explicitly says this in the manual but is implied
with the general body specs page for the 3T.
I would be more than happy to test this with a loaned 3T. I do have a
background in experimental design.
I'd say a good 3-6 mos period may be required. ;-)
I'll stay tuned for AG's observations or any comments if any of the
above is not correct.

Does the F280 do anything different on a 3T or 4T? Not that I could
tell. Tim posted once that the FP mode of the F280 output is
essentially fixed---that was totally unclear to me in any literature.

Can you modulate a T-flash in TTL on a 4T? Well, only a tad.
The John Lind technique for bright fill seems to work. Set the ASA up
to dec ambient and make up the difference with exp compensation---need
to be sure below synch speed of course. His other technique to do TTL
fill won't work as the flash won't fire if the speed is perceived to be
above 1/60. Wish it did as manual macro fill can be a pain.

Yup. Unless you cover the flash ready connector on the hot shoe. If you
do that, the flash ready light won't light, the camera won't know there
is a TTL flash attached and:

In Manual, you will get 1/15 sec. shutter speed.

In Auto, you will get whatever shutter speed is needed to complete the
exposure started by the flash, as with the original OM-2.
