Nope, didn't read about the 580EX.

I didn't have that manual until your recent link posting about the 
excellent old manual source. There are some other quite useful resources 
on the web which I read before deployment.. This one is very clear, yet 
comprehensive and specifically talks about use of the diffuser panel for
