That actually makes a lot of sense. The word camera is derived from the 
latin camera obscura (dark chamber) a shutter would let light into the 
chamber. If you say camera in Italy folks will most likely think you are 
talking about a room, not a device for taking pictures which is a 
macchina fotografica.
