That's what I did - I cut semi-circular 'rests' to suit the external  
diameter of 49mm and 55mm  filter rings in a  piece of 50mm square  
pine and bolted it down. That gave me something to hammer against and  
allows firmer strikes. With the lens firmly nested, I used a flat  
slip of harder wood, around 100mm long and with a rounded nose  
matching the diameter as a tool, striking it with a small hammer and  
moving it slightly around the rim with each hit.
I found it very effective with Zuikos which seem to have a fairly  
soft nose - some lenses have a much harder filter ring and are almost  
impossible.
It is possible to buy a tool, a filter ring vice which has curved  
'jaws' and expands inside the filter ring as you screw it out,  
reforming the ring. but they're not cheap of course.
