My recollection in a similar situation is the the app, RescuePro, that
came with one of my SanDisk cards, didn't work at all. I think the one
that did was FreeUndelete.
<http://ref.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/?5316fru> As I recall, it
didn't recover everything, as I had taken some pics since and
overwritten. Things may be different with an xD card than the SDHC card
I worked with. If one recovery app doesn't work, just try another. there
are a lot of free or trial version ones out there.

What did recover everything was the copies I had made each night on the
laptop. Why or how I had missed copying a day's shooting onto the
desktop or erased it, I'll never know for sure. I think it was due to
running out of space on my main image disk and getting into a
complicated arrangement of primary and back-up locations on various
disks. I do know that rigid rules not to delete any image in-camera
other than the last one taken and of making copies on FlashTrax and/or
Laptop each night saved me the one time I somehow screwed up.

Especially after that incident, I compare directories on the portable
storage devices to those on the desktop and update the back-ups of those
before deleting anything on the portables.

Good luck!
