We get the Lace Monitor around here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lace_monitor

They're not quite as big as the Perentie that Andrew mentioned, but I've
seen a 5' specimen crossing our street that would probably do some
damage to the front air-dam of a car if you hit it (not that that is the
only reason to slow down and avoid it of course - we'd do the same for a
Blue Tongue or anything really :-) ). I've a couple of photos of Lace
Monitors in other streets and in the National Park at the end of our
street that I'd put at about 3-4'. They're not that easy to photograph
all the time since when they head up the trees they make a point of
staying on the opposite side of the tree from you. Apparently there used
to be one that mostly lived on our property and that neighbours say was
an easy 6', but we haven't seen him since we've been here (we've got a
Carpet Python around the place though).

They're very pretty though. The late Jean-Paul Ferrero has a great
picture of a couple of Fraser Island dingos attacking a Lace Monitor.
Although this isn't the exact Ferrero photograph I mean, it gives an
idea of the size:

(The "great" one I mean is in his book, A Remarkable Eye and is from the
same incident, but has the Monitor facing the other way, more reared-up
out of the water, and seemingly lunging open-mouthed at the dingo on the
left).

Cheers,
