I'm not 'murican myself, but I've spend more than my share both in
the USA and in California (which I still think of as a separate
country) -- some of it rather recently, although for work and so in
relatively major metropolitan areas.

Couple of observations for you as to the only differences I've
observed as a consequence of the crisis:

o there're more people on the streets asking for / begging for
money

o the hospitality industry (read: hotels) still behave as if
guests
are made
                of gold

o shopping is often bleeding cheap, as stores are closing out. I
got an
80% discount on a new briefcase, which I had seen back home but
dismissed as possible due to it being too expensive

o my favorite Thai restaurant in San Francisco has closed up for
good.
Ruined my mood for a day or so last I was there, as I had really
looked forward to my habitual scorched mouth.

I'm sure that if you head into bad neighborhoods, dressed in gold
and screaming "I own AIG, Lehman Brothers and GM!", then you may
manage to get yourself into trouble. If you just do the usual
touristy stuff, going to usually touristy places then -- frankly --
even in crisis-hit USA you'll be safe ;) They might even be welcoming
to you too

Now, Wiliam, as you have announced your vacation on the list, you
know that you're required to show off photos to us all when you're
back....?
