Some Canon (D)SLR cameras used to/still do(?) have either a DEP mode
or an A-DEP mode. The A-DEP mode (on my 10D) looked at the reading
from the focus points available, picked the one with the closest item
in the scene under it, the one with the farthest item in the scene
under it (which could also be "infinity") and then selected an
aperture and focus distance that captured those two in focus.

The DEP mode. from memory, was a three-step process (I had it on my
50E/Elan IIE). You first pressed the shutter-release to focus on your
near-subject, then again for your far subject, and then a third time
to take the photo (when it would do as above - select focus distance
and aperture to capture those two points in focus). If I remember
rightly, it tried to just capture those two focal points in focus, so
that if you selected two points not too far (back to front) apart, it
would open the aperture as far as it could (to actually minimise DoF
to those two points, and blur the rest as far as it could.

I think the latter option is on the 5D, but is not on the 5D MkII.

Cheers,
