I think the reason for the Sigma's existence is that your substitutes 
aren't really substitutes.  None of your choices are zooms and your 
500mm end is only f/4.  The only other 500mm f/2.8 optic I can find is 
this and it's not a zoom either (amongst other more serious things):

Granted, you gotta really want a 200-500/2.8 to be willing to pay the 
freight but I'm sure there are a few buyers out there.  But it's only 
available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma autofocus mounts.  You don't need to 
worry about fitting it to your OM-1.  :-)
