Don't do that. It is cruel and it doesnt work.
They chew their feet off in an attempt to escape.
Use a mechanical trap that kills instantly instead. BTW rats are slow runners,
you can easily jump on him...just offering a viable alternative...:)

Purchase one of the glue pads - place it against a wall. This a very sticky
substance in a small plastic tray (3" X 5" +/-) which will imobilize
the critter as soon as he steps on it. Then just pick & pitch.
