Thanks for the comments.  I will attach a link to one shot of the scene with 
which I was faced.  I think a manually-focused lens, used with zone 
focusing, would have done a better job.  I will have to wait until I face 
the challenge again to see if I am correct.  The E-510 is a capable 
instrument if it is given the right tools to work with.
