Provia is generally more "usable" than Velvia as it is more "general
purpose". Probably 8000 of the slides in my library are on Provia. It has
less contrast too, but not nearly as wide as Astia. Astia's MTF curves are
somewhere between Provia and Velvia. If it wasn't for the digital
revolution, Astia would be king of the world.

In my own experience and from what I've seen from others, Provia 100F and
Velvia 100F seem to match up to a scanner resolution of about 3200 PPI
extremely well. Velvia 100F is definitely a better scanning film than the
original Velvia 50, but my experience with Astia is that this is a film
designed for the digital workflow. Unfortunately Astia is so well-mannered
that it lacks the oomph I personally like in my images.

But I must say, I am now really curious to see the new Ektar film

I've been following Ektar closely, but haven't tried it myself yet. From
what I've been seeing, Kodak has nuked the colors similarily to VS, which I
personally find grating. These high contrast/saturation films emphasize
certain colors, and I think Kodak's magenta-and-blue centric emphasis is a
bit nasty. That tire is a bit over-inflated. Anyway, Ektar is definitely a
worthy film and should be worth the effort. I had 20 rolls in my cart when
I cleared it all out. It may be a very close match to Velvia, but it lacks
that workflow/storage advantage which I'm struggling with.

Good man. We must keep the emphasis on B&W which really sets us
recalcitrants apart from the lemmings.
