I grew up along the Lake Michigan shoreline. When you stand on the beach
there is an optical illusion of earth's curvature. If you look straight out,
the horizon appears to fall away to your right and left.  I puzzled over
this for years and was fully convinced that I was seeing the earth's
curvature but yet I knew it was impossible.
