You should check this carefully.  I will make a sweeping generalisation and
say that ALL new desktop and laptop computers sold today use SATA disks.  As
a result, the disk manufacturers produce a greater volume and larger range
of SATA disks compared to the older PATA (=EIDE) disks.  The SATA disks may
also be cheaper than the equivalent PATA disks.

A new external USB disk is likely to be SATA.  An old laptop disk is likely
to be PATA.  So exercise some caution!
