It is absolutely necessary not to erase files and especially not to
reformat xD cards on the computer for older Oly P&Ss. Whether that still
applies or applies to Oly DSLRs, I don't know, but I'd follow the rule.
It's also a really good idea for any other xD application. The xD card
has no built-in controller, so relies on camera firmware. I gave chapter
and verse on this in a post a few years ago.

I don't think it matters with CF cards and suspect it doesn't matter
with SD(HC) cards. Certainly erasing all files on these cards with
computer isn't a problem with CF cards. I don't see why reformatting
should ever be needed. If I do so for some reason, I still do it in the
camera with which the card is to be used. Why take an unnecessary risk?

Chuck may have misread a part of your post. "My computer software also
allows me the option of deleting the files from the camera" If by that
you mean you use the software that came with the camera to connect to it
and both to download the images and to exercise an option to erase them
from the camera after downloading, I think that's safe with any camera/card.

Where the problems have arisen in the past is in using the OS file
browser, such as Finder and Explorer, to erase and/or reformat cards.
