See this short interview with Watanabe in BJP for an Olympus view of where
they might be going with m4/3, which I think confirms your speculation:

It is interesting that the Olympus entry into the DSLR market made this such
a major issue and now they seem to be setting themselves up to push the
hardware to the opposite extreme.

The specs have a section

Image stabilizer
Manual Function

input focal length 8, 10, 12, 16, 18, 24, 28, 30, 35, 40, 48, 50, 55, 65,
70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 100, 105, 120, 135, 150, 180, 200, 210, 250, 300, 350,
400, 500, 600, 800, 1000

which suggests they are serious about making it more than an auto point &
shoot with no controls.

I like what I'm seeing and if they keep pushing in this direction they will
hopefully become the big fish in a niche that could grow into a very big
market.

Do you remember how Olympus made a big deal about how the 4/3 lenses were
specifically designed for digital by making the light rays as parallel as
possible when leaving the rear element.
