You are probably right about the "real issue" and this is very serious to my 
eyes. For most of the scanned slide iamges I have to use a high Radius 
(20-30 pixels) and a low Amont (~10%) USM to increase the contrast and 
reduce the haze effect.

Actually the problem is not limited to slide, with negatives I sometimes see 
darken bright sky near the frame to frame edge.

The Nikon is very reliable, my 4000ED have more than 20K passes and still 
work like new but I wouldn't say it built like tanks. On the other hand it 
just feel like toy when you hear the scanning and focusing noise. The LS-10 
I purchased in 1993 was much more smooth and quite.
