With a high-contrast slide (such as Velvia), I'm usually using Vuescan and I
do the dual-exposure thing.  However, once in a while I have a problem slide
and will use NikonScan, but use the highlight/shadow recovery function which
will add an additional pass with adjusted brightness.  Only real problem I
have with the NikonScan solution is time.  You could read "War and Peace"
while waiting for it to finish.
