In fact "www" is just a convention to indicate a Web server hostname rather
than some other type of server; it's in no way a requirement or part of a
formal specification. There are no rules or limits governing the "prefix" to
the bare domain name, other than limits on length and valid characters.
Normally the full hostname string is passed to the receiving server, which
will parse it as it sees fit.

That said, I too am a bit surprised to see "en-US" in the hostname - it is
unusual. A guess is that it is used to direct the request to a specific
server (or one of a set of servers) based on language.
