Thanks for the continued suggestions.

There seems to be just a 7-core cable to the front:  audio plus 4 memory
card slots, plus 2 USB ports,...).  I guess it's USB plus mic plus left and
right audio...

Yes, I had to unplug this to seat the parallel PCI card, but I've checked
and it's reinstalled ok.  If it wasn't I guess the front wouldn't work but
the back would?

It's a mystery!
