I think all you have lost is your bearings, Jim! And I say that from a
position of knowledge - of lost bearings, and much else.

If the 510 is the same as the 410, the red dot confirms autofocus, not
autoexposure. Assuming you are using 4/3 optics, I guess you might need to
clean the contacts on body and lens. But if it's the exotic OT optics, hell
you don't deserve no AF confirmation! Or else you need to clean the same
contacts on your AF-confirm chipped adaptor.

But as Jez pointed out, others are better placed to opine on red dots - see
you over on the LUG?

Subject: [OM] E-510 Question

I have been using my E-510 for 15 months, so I must assume that warranty
support has expired. Yesterday, I noticed that the "red dot" in the center
of the viewfinder, which normally indicates the status of the autoexposure
system, no longer lights up. In "A" mode, I can see the shutter speed
change with changes in light, and a few test images appear to be normal.

What, exactly, have I lost with the disappearance of this red dot?
