I think the most important question one should ask is why do we take
pictures? The reason for the pictures usually determines the media used. I
realize I am not typical, but I take pictures for different reasons and use
different equipment:

1. Work: Digital 2D. This includes ebay auctions, web site, mostly for
sales of photographic equipment and supplies.

2. Documentation: Digital 2D. I maintain two blogs (one on stereo
photography and one on running), plus I edit our stereo club's newsletter
and web site. Digital is the fastest and most cost-effective way to get the
pictures on the internet and the newsletter.

3. Family/Memories: Film 3D. This is what I like to do and these pictures
have the most value for me. I love taking pictures of my family, vacation,
etc. I love the way the stereo slides look. After every trip, I look
forward to mounting the stereo slides. I then re-live the trip through
these pictures. Even though these are mainly for my own pleasure,
occasionally, I make programs that I show in our stereo club and elsewhere,
and of course I hope that one day my children and grandchildren will
appreciate this collection of stereo slides.

4. Competition: Film 3D. I am an active member in two stereo clubs and
compete regularly. I also enter PSA (Photographic Society of America)
exhibitions. I like the challenge of creating stereo pictures that appeal
not only to me but to others as well.

So, to summarize, if it is work or documentation, I take digital pictures,
thousands of them every year. When it counts (family, memories, good
photography) I shoot film (stereo slides). Yes, film is expensive, but for
me it is well worth it and it is usually only a small fraction of the trip
(when on vacation). I do not think of the expense when tripping the
shutter, but I am careful to compose the picture well.
